Choosing teak outdoor furniture is a smart and lasting investment. Known for its durability and timeless appeal, teak can even be passed down as an heirloom. Plus, it’s easy to maintain if you follow a few simple tips.

Teak is perfect for outdoor use. It can withstand any climate year-round and doesn’t require much protection. The wood’s natural oils make it resistant to water damage and decay. Over time, untreated teak will develop a beautiful silvery-gray patina from sun exposure. This change is purely cosmetic and doesn’t weaken the wood. If you want to keep that warm honey color, you can apply a breathable UV protectant specifically designed for teak.

So, how do you care for your new teak furniture? Start with an annual spring cleaning to keep it looking its best. For weathered teak, use a specially formulated teak cleaner along with a soft bristle brush or an abrasive sponge like a Scotch Brite Pad. Work on small sections, cleaning from top to bottom. Make sure to rinse thoroughly with a hose, as the cleaner shouldn’t dry on the wood. After rinsing, pat it dry and let it air-dry in the sun.

If you want to maintain that natural amber color, consider using a teak sealer. You can apply it with a spray bottle, brush, or rag. After the first layer dries for about an hour, add a second layer. The furniture will be ready to use the next day. Just remember, the sealer works best on a clean surface, so always clean the teak before sealing. Regularly reapply the sealer—once a year is usually enough.

To avoid stains from spills, act quickly! Wipe them up right away, then wash the area with soapy water and a soft brush. For tougher stains, like coffee or red wine, use the teak cleaner. If a stain has set in, you can lightly sand it out for a clean finish.

Avoid using brass brushes, steel wool, or pressure washers on your teak furniture. Steel wool can leave rust spots, and pressure washers or brass brushes may create rough surfaces. If you do end up with any splinters, a bit of sanding can smooth things out.

With just a little care, teak can last a lifetime. This low-maintenance wood is often seen as the gold standard for outdoor furniture, combining classic style with exceptional longevity to enhance your outdoor spaces for years to come.
